GotBackup review: a $9.97 backup plan with a pay-to-share option

A cloud backup service you can use on its own, plus an optional reseller program and an automated marketing system called 24/7 Autopilot.

The short version

GotBackup is first a backup service: it saves copies of your photos, videos and files from your phones and computers. Its main plan gives a household 6 TB across six accounts for $9.97 a month. On top of that, members can pay a small yearly fee to become resellers and earn commissions on people they refer.

If you need backup anyway, the free account is an easy way to try it. If you're mainly interested in the income side, read the pay section carefully and keep your expectations small.

What you get

  • Automatic backup for unlimited devices: Windows, Mac, iPhone, Android and the web
  • File sharing, document collaboration and photo albums
  • 256-bit AES encryption, both on your device and on GotBackup's servers

How the reseller program pays

To earn, you add the reseller option. GotBackup's sign-up page currently lists a $20 yearly reseller fee; some promotions have charged $40 or waived it. Commissions as GotBackup describes them:

CommissionHow it worksOn a $9.97 plan
First month200% of a personal referral's first monthly paymentAbout $19.94, once
Every month after25% of each personal referral's paymentAbout $2.49/mo per customer
Matching check25% of what your direct referrals earnDepends on their results
Team (binary) bonusUp to 25%, based on your whole team, paid on a 4-2 cycleDepends on company profits

Source: GotBackup's reseller offer page. GotBackup states that payout amounts are based on company monthly net profits.

What that means in real money: 10 paying customers on the family plan bring in about $25 a month once the first-month bonus is paid. Anything beyond that comes from building a team of other resellers.

24/7 Autopilot: the marketing system

24/7 Autopilot is GotBackup's built-in marketing tool. GotBackup explains that you connect your social media accounts once, and the system posts ready-made content every day. When people click your link, automated emails and presentations explain the service and the opportunity. Creating the account is free and doesn't need a credit card.

It saves you from writing your own posts. But it posts the same content as many other members, so it works best when you also add your own honest story and answer questions personally.

Who it's for, and who should skip it

A good fit if you…

  • need family photo and file backup anyway
  • like recommending things you use
  • want a low-cost side project to learn online marketing

Skip it if you…

  • need income soon to pay bills
  • don't want to talk to friends or post about it
  • already pay for iCloud, Google One or Dropbox and are happy with it

Things to know before joining

  • Most of the income potential comes from recruiting other resellers, not just selling backup. The FTC notes that most people in MLMs make little or no money.
  • Some customer reviews online mention trouble with support, billing and restoring data. Test a restore with a few files before you rely on it.
  • Keep a second copy of your most important files somewhere else, whichever backup service you use.

Questions

Is GotBackup free?

There is a free 5 GB account. Paid plans start under $10 a month; the Family plan is $9.97 a month or $99.97 a year for 6 TB split across 6 accounts.

Do I have to sell GotBackup to use it?

No. You can just use the backup service. Selling it is optional and needs the reseller upgrade.

How much can I earn as a GotBackup reseller?

It depends on how many paying customers you refer and keep. On the $9.97 plan, a personal referral pays about $19.94 the first month and about $2.49 a month after that. GotBackup does not promise income, and most people in programs like this earn little or nothing.

What is 24/7 Autopilot?

It is GotBackup's automated marketing system. After you connect your social media accounts, it posts content, sends follow-up emails and shows presentations to people who click your link.

Who runs GotBackup?

GotBackup says it is owned by GVO (Global Virtual Opportunities), an internet marketing and software company.
